[Description]

Dualcomm's patent pending PCI Express 4-Port gigabit Ethernet Switch TAP card (DCP-1004L) offers several unique functionalities that make it an ideal network traffic sniffing/capturing component in building an integrated network appliance for applications such as VoIP recording, network protocol analysis, IDS and etc.

Network Tap with Dual Monitor Ports

Of the four network ports available on DCP-1004L, two designated network ports are implemented as two inline ports for connecting DCP-1004L as an inline device between two end network devices, and the other two network ports are implemented as two monitor ports, each of which captures the identical mirrored traffic traveling between the two inline network ports. It is plug and play to users and no user configuration is required.

The availability of two monitor ports will be very useful for many situations where more than one packet sniffing tools are desired to be performed on the same captured traffic at the same time but with different network interfaces. For example, in a VoIP call recording system, one monitor port is used for connecting to a sever computer running VoIP call recording program and the other monitor port is available for connecting a protocol analysis tool such as Wireshark for trouble-shooting and other packet protocol analysis purposes (refer to a typical  network setup below for VoIP call recording).

Failsafe Bypass

DCP-1004L implements the two inline network ports to be Failsafe Bypass that provides the capacity to maintain link connectivity even if DCP-1004L loses its power. Therefore, DCP-1004L can be deployed in a critical path of a network infrastructure without a concern of  possible link failure due to power outages.

Power over Ethernet Inline Power Pass-Through

DCP-1004L allows the  inline power of Power-over-Ethernet to pass-through between the two inline network ports so that the PoE inline power from an uplink connection to one inline network port is passed to the other inline network port. As such a connected PoE power device (e.g., an PoE IP phone)  can still receive the inline power and be powered seamlessly.

Reuse of an Existing NIC Port on the Main CPU Motherboard.

DCP-1004L only draws power from a PCI-E slot on a computer motherboard in which it is plugged and sends mirrored packets by connecting one of the monitor ports by a short Cat5e patch cable to an existing NIC port available on most of the off-the-shelf computer motherboard. The reuse of an existing NIC port on the computer motherboard keeps the cost low for DCP-1004L and also make no software driver required for DCP-1004L.
